The First Emperor — China’s Terracotta Army

January 2008 event: The First Emperor — China’s Terracotta Army

Description:

The First Emperor: China's Terracotta Army explores one of the greatest archaeological discoveries of the twentieth century, giving an insight into China’s First Emperor, Qin Shihuangdi, and his legacy.

The exhibition includes a number of the world-famous terracotta warriors from Xi'an, China, which were buried alongside the First Emperor in readiness for the afterlife, as well as some of the most striking recent discoveries made on the site.

In introducing the idea of a unified state and effectively creating China in 221 BC, the First Emperor of Qin created what is today the oldest surviving political entity in the world. How that state has survived, developed and is viewed today is explored through events, lectures and debates around the exhibition.

Dinner party at Ping Pong Chinese Restaurant

March 2008 event: Dinner party at Ping Pong Chinese Restaurant

Description:

This rapidly expanding chain of stylish dim sum eateries plays host to throngs of hip clientele sitting amid sleek decor (Chinese wood carvings & huge black & white murals of rising steam) as they Hoover up plates of reasonably priced dumplings. Great for dim sum novices, the food isn’t cutting edge, but is generally flavorsome & fun: think steamed scallop, king prawn & shiitake mushrooms wrapped in translucent wrappers, or baked chicken puffs, & fried spinach & pork wontons. Occasional disappointments of rubbery squid cake & doughy Shanghai dumplings are made up for by great cocktails, such as Kumquat Mojito, although the Chinese teas are well worth a look too.
